So, I discovered something today that is absolutely fascinating to me.
I was reseraching indentured servitude and its impact on the development on the colonies when I came across this statement:
“Also, servants moved on, forcing a need for costly replacements; slaves, especially ones you could identify by skin color, could not move on and become free competitors.”
First of all, that pisses me off because it was just because the already weathly landowners didnt want these people once theyve finally made it on their own after working their asses off rather than having every fucking thing handed to them to succeed–that just might take away a few dollars or pounds from those greedy fuckers. They wanted all the wealth and competition to themeselves.
Second of all (and this is the discovery part), the way this quote is worded brought something to my attention that I had never ever thought of before: The only reason African Americans were the ones that ended up being subjected and isolated to slavery was because they were easily identifiable by their skin color, not because they were inferior or foreign. This identification would prevent someone who isn’t a slave to be confused as one.
maybe im not the first person to think of that, but I definately have never heard it put that way before.
